What is a “Civic or Community Leader”
A civic or community leader is anyone who takes responsibility for strengthening their community, protecting democratic values, or advancing the common good—regardless of their title, background, or level of experience.
You don’t need to be elected or have a formal role. Civic and community leadership shows up when you:
Serve on a board, commission, or advisory group
Volunteer with a local nonprofit or mutual aid group
Support a candidate or policy campaign
Write letters to the editor or speak up at public meetings
Knock doors, organize events, or host neighborhood conversations
Help your group or team function better with tools, facilitation, or strategy
If you care enough to get involved—and are willing to help others take action—you are a civic leader.

Hi, I’m Kai Degner—former mayor, nonprofit founder, and leadership coach.
I’ve facilitated hundreds of public meetings and community dialogues, served on countless local grassroots and formal boards and commissions, and I'm at the dissertation phase of a Ph.D. in strategic leadership.
To respond to the disruption since Jan 20, 2025, we need collective action - but collective ACTION requires collective LEADERSHIP. More than ever, we need to support local-level community members to emerge as leaders or level up their leadership skills and knowledge.
I created SIMPLER Leadership to offer tools and community I wish I’d had earlier. The tools and frameworks make leadership feel less overwhelming and more… well, SIMPLER. SIMPLER stands for two core leadership frameworks—one for self leadership, one for team leadership—that guide everything we do in this mastermind. And I want to share them with people stepping up into expanding community and civic leadership roles - because we need it now more than ever.
